BP5_2009121_Socialbookmarking

Research education uses for social bookmarking. Summarize, post your findings and use proper APA guidelines for in text citations and three references.

My name is joyis4fsu on del.icio.us.

I began with the usual Google search on the educational uses of social bookmarking and a plethora of sources came up on the valuable use of the bookmarks. The first site values social bookmarking, it “lets students choose from a variety of acceptable links, making for productive research that still allows for variability (Classroom 2.0, 2009).” I can relate to this statement due to the restraints we have at school. Several websites are blocked and can this can turn to frustration for the students as well as the teacher. If the teacher has the ability he or she can create the delicious bookmarks and save them for the students. Students can then safely navigate through the research to answer their questions and complete assignments. Another benefit would be the students’ ability to work on research at home. Parents might be somewhat relieved knowing that their child is navigating safely around the web while at home.

One article I found summed it up and my feelings exactly. Jackson states “How many times do you bookmark the site and how many folders do you create?” And that is me! I have bookmarks on every computer and everywhere. It makes me crazy! I cannot wait to try the bookmarking at school, but I have a feeling it may be blocked.

When I was doing my research on the educational uses of social bookmarking, I came across the disadvantages of it. I feel it is important to visit both sides of the debate. Most people often hear what they want to hear, but I like to delve. I am also known as the FBI. Doctor mentions, “there are no standards set for the keywords, controlled terms and vocabulary used.” As I read her article I was compelled to see if her disadvantages were intact true in delicious. The tags can be subjective as to the person who creates them. I agree with the possible disadvantages she listed but I do feel there are more advantages to social bookmarking than disadvantages.

POST ASSIGNMENT - Research educational uses for blogs and create your first post from your findings.

Blogs can be used for various purposes in the technology age of today. Most of the sites I have used for research contain blogs for teachers to share and collaborate on ideas for educational purposes whether in the classroom or planning.

Teachers can create blogs for feedbacks from the students outside school hours or during class time. The students can utilize the blog as an exit strip from the lesson in a technology based classroom. The blog can also serve as brainstorming for assignments with individual students or a group working on a project. The blogs can be used to reach other classrooms around the world giving students a chance to interact and enrich their lives through conversations.

Our principal used the blog as a book study last year. As we read a text we were guided with questions and asked to reflect on our readings as well as our peer findings. Unfortunately teachers used our contract time as limiting the idea of the blog and we really were unable to produce the good intentions that were sought.

BP4_2009121_SettingupGoogleReaderRSSfeeds

Choose five RSS feeds for YOUR professional purposes. In your blog, briefly explain why you chose each one and how it will benefit you in your profession. Note: Emphasis on briefly. You do not need to include references for this post. img src="http://nameorg.org/2009/11/join-no-name-calling-week-jan-25-29-2010/"

http://nameorg.org/ The National Association for Multicultural Education is a volunteer driven organization that represents my classroom. Being the ESL teacher I have at least 5 different languages and cultures every year. I must be respectful to their view and teach my students tolerance for one another. So through the feeds, I hope to learn lessons and share ideas on how to help my students.

http://k6educators.about.com/ About.com reaches all education grade levels but I choose the feed on elementary education. I feel the plethora of information regarding back to school, lesson plans and the teaching 101 are very useful. Teaching 101 brings back the joy to teaching and has blogs and articles regarding the highlights of my profession. There are too many teachers burning out and unhappy where they are as a career. I don’t want to be one of the teachers that fly the coop. There have been 5 at my school in the last 2 years.

feed://www.edutopia.org/edutopia_rss.xml The feed to Edutopia is one of my favorites and I have been receiving it since I started my literature research. There are articles for teachers on instruction, politics and several areas that concern me as a teacher. I look forward to articles regarding the technology integration and the bonus of hearing about green schools.

http://www.hepg.org/main/Home Teaching Immigrant and Second Language Children This feed is mostly blogs and articles from the Harvard Education Publishing Group. I narrowed the feed to teaching immigrant and second language learners due to my current classroom. I have been teaching sheltered for 3 years and since I hold that certification I don’t see myself going back into regular education. I find the information mostly political and from around the country. I like to hear what works in some states and did not in others. The Board of Education for Florida makes decisions for us and eventually I think the teachers should be part of it.

English Language (ESL) Learning Online - UsingEnglish.com

UsingEnglish.com has a substantial amount of tools and resources for students and teachers to use during the learning process. As an ESL teacher I am constantly reteaching and reevaluating the lessons. Half the class may understand and half may not understand a topic. I have to keep the scope and sequence moving but I cannot leave students behind so I can search the ESL site looking for ways to reapply the concepts.

BP3_2009121_DiscoveringWeb2.0Tools

http://www.ontheroad.to/

I choose the Web 2.0 tool because of easy application I can incorporate it into my reading anthology as well as social studies. One story, we read as a grade level in the anthology, is about a little girl’s trip to her grandmother’s house. The main character, Kristine, is entertained with her grandmother’s stories of the African talking cloth. Kristine is fascinated by grandmother’s “collection of life.” The grandmother tells in detail of her trip to Ghana and the people she encountered as well as sights.

For an assignment, using the Internet and other resources, the students would need to create an album of their trip to Ghana with photos and journal entries.

Title: My Trip to Ghana, Africa with Africa

Obj: TLW manipulate the site, http://www.ontheroad.to/, to create a travel album on their trip to Africa. TLW recall facts and details from the text to create a fictional album with journal entries.

Assessment: The final travel album will be graded using a rubric.

EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS- I really enjoyed the album creation tool and found it user friendly. I feel the more you use it the more at ease you will be with it. It becomes user friendly and easier to facilitate the tools. The Web 2.0 tool has so many educational benefits. My first tool to recommend would be the mapping of your trip. You receive latitude and longitude on the maps when you search for locations that can relate to a geography and math lesson. Questions for a learner creating a trip album to answer might be: How many days would it take you to reach your first destination? Does your plane need to stop in certain cities or can you take direct flights?

Another educational use would incorporate writing-journal entries, and sequencing. The students can create writing entries that can be graded and also practice skills for sequencing.
